Part of a seasonal garden maintenance in Scotland

Ah, spring is here, and Scotland’s gardens are ready to wake up after a long winter’s nap! This is a wonderful season to kickstart your garden’s growth and vitality with a bit of love and care. For home gardeners with small to medium plots, there’s plenty to do to create a blooming oasis.

**Plant Care & Planting Schedule**

– **Early Spring:** Sow hardy annuals like sweet peas and cornflowers indoors or under glass to give them a head start.

– **Late Spring:** Begin transplanting seedlings outdoors once the risk of frost has passed, usually around May in Scotland. Try primroses, pansies, and marigolds for early pops of color.

– **Vegetables & Herbs:** Sow carrots, radishes, spinach, and spring onions. Herbs like chives, parsley, and mint can also start their journey outdoors.

**Hedge & Lawn Maintenance**

– **Lawn Love:** It’s time to start mowing again! Set your mower to a high setting for the first few cuts, gradually lowering it over the season.

– **Hedge Health:** Trim hedges lightly to encourage new growth, but avoid heavy pruning until later in the season, as birds may be nesting.

**Do’s and Don’ts for Spring**

– **Do:** Add compost to your soil to boost nutrient levels.

– **Don’t:** Water in the middle of the day; morning is best to prevent rapid evaporation and fungal growth.

– **Do:** Clean and organize your tools for the busy seasons ahead.

– **Don’t:** Overcrowd your beds with new plants—give them space to grow!

**Helpful Tip:** Create a compost bin if you haven’t already. Spring is a time of plant clippings and clean-ups, and composting turns waste into garden gold.
